Meet Brett

Public service has defined my career. I’ve focused on advancing economic, racial, and social justice to expand opportunity, protect civil rights, and strengthen stability and wellbeing for everyone. I served as a senior advisor and communications director to progressive leaders in Congress — now Senator Adam Schiff (CA), Rep. Mark Takano (CA), and Rep. Keith Ellison (MN) — helping advance policies rooted in fairness and in making sure our institutions work for people too often left out. That experience shaped how I understand responsibility and service.

I carried those values into local government, where decisions have more immediate, personal impact. Today, as Chief Communications Officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, I put those values into action by connecting residents to services, delivering clear, fact-based information, and ensuring resources reach communities with the least access.

Public Servant and Communicator

Community Advocate and Local Leader

I live in Santa Monica with my wife, who was born and raised here, and our young daughter, who will attend our public schools. Being part of this community shapes how I approach leadership and responsibility. We are raising our family here, participating in our schools, supporting local businesses, and navigating the same city systems as our neighbors.

As Chair of the Santa Monica Human Services Commission, I advise the City Council on homelessness, social services, and community wellbeing. My role is to evaluate programs, review data, weigh tradeoffs, and make recommendations that reflect both our values and our fiscal realities. It is about helping shape decisions that move beyond rhetoric and result in improvements in people’s daily lives.

Husband, Dad, Renter, All-Around Good Guy

I am a husband, a dad, and a life-long renter, and that shapes how I approach public service. My wife and I think every day about the cost of housing and childcare, the quality of our public schools, whether our daughter can go to a clean, well-kept park, and how to make sure our neighborhoods and small businesses are stable and welcoming.

Living here as a renter while raising a child keeps these issues real. To us, they are not abstract. They affect our daily life and guide how I approach shaping policy, which should always be grounded in facts, focused on stability, and built to last.

Our challenges require leadership that shares this city’s values and turns them into action. I’m running for City Council to bring real experience, a commitment to fairness and opportunity, and a record of delivering results so Santa Monica works for those that live here and for the workers who keep our businesses running.
